Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American Bronc baseball team (4-7) was defeated by the 17th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks (6-0) on Sunday (Feb. 19) in the final game of the Al Ogletree Classic by a score of 13-2.

The Broncs kept it close in the early innings, allowing a single run in the top of the second on a single through the right side of the infield by John Henry Marquardt that brought Brian Walker across the plate. UTPA answered in the bottom half of the frame with Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) line a double to right-center field, driving in Chris Lozano (El Paso, TX/Phoenix J.C.) to even the score at one a piece.

Arkansas then put two more on the board in the fifth and added three in the sixth. The Broncs then put their final run on the board in the bottom half of the sixth when Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, Ca/Santa Rosa J.C.) came home thanks to a throwing error by the UA shortstop on a ball hit by Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) to make the score 6-2.

Arkansas kept up the scoring, plating one in the seventh before the Broncs' pitching fell apart. Five Bronc relievers combined to walk seven hitters in the final two innings and allow six earned runs. Arkansas scored three runs in the eighth off Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) and Ray Silva (Clearlake, Ca/Santa Rosa J.C.) before Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) came on and finished off the inning. Guajardo then allowed two runs in the ninth while Stephen Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.) allowed one.

Senior Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) started the game for the Broncs, lasting 5 1/3 innings. Guerra gave up five earned runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out three. With the loss, his record falls to 1-3 on the season.

Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) was the sole Bronc to collect multiple hits, with two in three at-bats. Flores was also the only UTPA player to draw a walk in the contest. Autrey was 1-4 at the plate and collected the only run batted in for the Broncs.

Chris Rhoads picked up the win for Arkansas, pitching seven innings and allowing just five hits and two unearned runs, improving his record to 2-0.
