Behind a career-high 23 points by sophomore forward Nathan Hawkins (San Antonio, TX), the University of Texas Pan-American Broncs men's basketball team (11-10) beat the Huston-Tillotson University Rams (2-12) 80-60 tonight at the UTPA Fieldhouse. It was the Broncs' fourth straight win.
The Rams stuck with the Broncs early, even taking a 9-6 lead in the opening minutes, but the Broncs responded with an 22-6 run to take a double-digit lead they would never relinquish.
Hawkins hit seven of his first eight shots, as he scored 15 points on lay-ups and finger rolls in the lane to help the Broncs take a 39-23 half-time lead. Hawkins finished shooting 11-13.
"It's nice to see the individual honors, but anytime a post player scores it's a testament to his teammates because they're the ones that have to get the ball inside to him," head coach
Tom Schuberth said.
"I thought not only that the peremiter players did a great job but that Zach Trader (La Porte, TX) had some outstanding assists to him."
Hawkins wasn't alone in the scoring department, though. Senior guard
Brian Burrell (Nacogdoches, TX) missed first his first four three-point attempts, but hit his next four as he ended up with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Senior guard Paul Stoll scored in double-figures for the fifth-straight game by notching 13 points. Stoll is averaging 16.6 points per game during that stretch.
Trader scored eight points to go with 12 rebounds (four offensive) and a career-high six assists to help contribute.
A pair of red-shirt freshman also reached some milestones as forward Jacob Trader (LaPorte, TX) scored a career-high six points in a career-high nine minutes and guard Steven Silva (Mission, TX) hit his first career free throw.
As a a team, the Broncs shot 50% from the field and 60% from inside the arc.
The Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday, January 22nd at 7:05 p.m. against Houston Baptist at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
