Nov. 15, 2008

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program slid past Sul Ross State as they defeated the Lobos 84-59 this Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse in Edinburg, Texas.

"We were able to play everyone which was a good thing. It was a hard game to gauge because we were working on some things that we haven't worked on consistently in practice," said head men's basketball coach Tom Schuberth.

The Broncs opened the game with a two-point lead but allowed Sul Ross to take the lead at 19:26 with a shot behind the arc by Jeremy Hammond. The Broncs regained the lead at 11-10 on a dunk by Emmanuel Jones with 15:40 left to play.

UTPA went on an 18-0 run before Sul Ross was ever able to score. The Lobos finally scored on a free throw shot by Anthony Woods making the score 42-20. Sul Ross was only able to score three more times, twice off free throws and once on a three-point shot by Author Govan.

The Broncs held the lead throughout the first half and went into halftime leading 47-25.

At halftime, UTPA had two Broncs in double-digit scoring with Emmanuel Jones collecting 12 points on 6-11 shooting from the field adding four assists and Nathan Hawkins with 10 points adding three rebounds.

As the second half began, the Broncs were able to widen their lead to 27 off a jumper by Luis Valera making the score 60-33.

Sul Ross State was able to bring the deficit down by as much as 17 after two good free throw shots by Roderick Gunter making the score 62-45.

Senior Emmanual Jones heightened his level of play as he recorded two dunks in a matter of a minute with the first at 4:57 and the next off an alley-oop from Nick Weiermiller at 3: 43 making the score 76-52.

The Broncs closed the season home opener with an 84-59 victory over the Sul Ross State Lobos.

Nathan Hawkins finished the night with 17 points, seven rebounds and one steal.

"Now we have a huge challenge in front of us as we head to UNLV and California which are two high-powered basketball teams that will certainly be a different atmosphere. If we don't play better defense, we won't have a chance to play out there."

The Broncs hit the road as they face a rigorous road schedule as they face UNLV on Nov. 18 in their next contest followed by a match-up against California-Berkeley on Nov. 20.
