The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program dropped their first road game of the season to UNLV this Tuesday (Nov. 18) night by a score of 73-48 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Nick Weiermiller started things off for Texas-Pan American as he gave the Broncs a 3-0 lead within the first minute of play. Both teams then struggled as they played a quiet three minutes, but a jumper from Emmanuel Jones broke the silence making the score 5-2.
UNLV fired back shooting from behind the arc tying the score at five with 15:29 on the clock. The next couple of minutes would consist of fouls, turnovers and steals as UTPA accounted for six turnovers with one steal and UNLV committing one foul, two turnovers and one steal before the next timeout at 11:55 with UNLV leading 8-5.
The game mentality changed for both teams as they turned things around and kept the score close and even tied the score on three occasions in the remaining minutes of the first half. The Broncs entered halftime trailing by three with a score of 27-24.
A layup by Ben Smith brought the Broncs within one to start the second half but UNLV fired back with a 9-0 run in a span of a little over three minutes before the Broncs put up two off a layup by P.J. Turner making the score 36-28 with 15:30 left to play.
UTPA was unable to keep up with the Runnin' Rebels game as UNLV went on a 9-0 run but was broken by an Emmanuel Jones jumper at the 11:27 mark making the score 32-46.
The Broncs were unable to catch up to the Runnin' Rebels as they continued to widen the lead in the remaining minutes of the second half. UNLV would take the game defeating the Broncs 73-48.
Senior Emmanuel Jones would finish on top for the Broncs as he finished the night with 16 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds, nine of which were defensive rebounds.
Ben Smith would also finish in double-figures for the Broncs as he collected 10 points and six rebounds which would go down as career-highs in the record books for Smith to go along with two assists.
The Broncs will next head to the Golden State as they face The University of California-Berkeley on Nov. 20 with game time slated for 9:30 p.m. CT.
