Dec. 22, 2008

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program dropped a 61-54 road decision to Weber State at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic hosted by Southern Miss this Monday (Dec. 22) night at the Bert Jenkins Gymnasium.

The loss brings the Broncs to 4-8 on the season.

"We didn't shoot the ball well, but we executed our offense. We hung in there and shots started to come in for us," said head men's basketball coach Tom Schuberth.

In the final 5:50 of the first half, the Broncs were able to close up on the gap as UTPA went on an 11-0 run to bring them nine points within Weber State to make the score 29-20 at the half. The Broncs shot 51.4 percent (6-11) from the free throw line to account for the majority of their points in the first.

The Broncs continued on their run to start the second as they went on an 11-2 run to tie the score at 31 with 16:38 on the clock on a three-point shot by Nick Weiermiller. But UTPA was not able to hold on to the momentum as Weber State regained the lead and took it to double-figures and defeated the Broncs.

UTPA shot better in the second as they finished with 34.4 percent (11-32) for an overall 28.3 percent (17-60) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-22) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (14-21) from the line.

Emmanuel Jones shined for the Broncs as he recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 shooting from the line.

Nick Weiermiller scored double-figures as well as he finished the night with 18 points and a career-high six rebounds along with three assists.

Weber State had three Wildcats score in double-figures as Steve Panos scored 13 points, Damian Lilliard scored 11 and Daviin Davis added another 11 points.

"I'm proud of the guys because they never quit even after they ran out of gas. Hopefully this lay-off will get us healthy before we head to El Paso and then the two home games afterwards," added Schuberth.

The Broncs will be back in action after the New Year as the Broncs travel to El Paso, Texas to face the Miners of Texas-El Paso on January 2 at 9:05 p.m. CT.
