Back-to-back runs in four innings cost the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs their 10th win of the season, as they fell 5-2 to New Orleans in game three of a three day series at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
With the setback, the Broncs fell to 9-20 on the season while the Privateers improved to 20-9 overall. The Broncs have now lost their sixth straight game.
Evan Cunningham pitched a complete game but was unable to capture the win for the Broncs dropping his overall record to 0-2 for the season. Cunningham allowed 11 hits, five runs - four earned to go with eight strikeouts and one walk.
The Broncs led an attack on the Privateers in the bottom of the second when Roly Gonzalez tripled down the left field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Perez, to put UTPA up 1-0.
That would be the only run that the Broncs would produce until the ninth where they started a rally and added a run, making the final score 5-2.
Down 1-0, UNO plated two runs on three hits when Jeff Lanning reached on infield single to the shortstop and scored on a Michael Knipper doubled to right field, to tie the game at 1-1.
Ryan Eden kept things rolling as he singled to center field, scoring Knipper from second base and gave the Privateers a 2-1 advantage.
UNO produced a runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to collected a three-game sweep over the Broncs.
The Broncs single run in the ninth came on a rally that started with back-to-back singles by Gonzalez and Perez. With two outs in the inning, Jose Mendoza singled to left field, scoring Gonzalez from second base. The inning would end with a Jordan Rutenbar fly ball to left field.
Offensively the Broncs were led by Gonzalez who finished the game 2-for-3 to go with two runs scored and a stolen base while Rutenbar went 2-for-4.
The Privateers were led by Lanning who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Broncs will be back in action in a double-header against Southland Conference-foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday (Apr. 8) in Corpus Christi, TX with game time slated for 11 a.m.
