Volleyball Drops a 3-2 Heartbreaker over South Dakota

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program suffered a 3-2 heartbreaker over South Dakota this morning at the Sharp Gymnasium in Houston, Texas.

UTPA captured wins in the second and fourth set with 25-23 wins. The Lady Broncs dropped the first set by a score of 21-25, the third by a score of 18-25, and the fifth by a score of 12-15.

The Lady Broncs recorded a .121 hitting percentage for the match along with 51 kills, 46 assists, 57 digs, and 10 total blocks.

Three Lady Broncs finished in double-figure kills with Kaitlin Vasquez recording 13 kills, Rita Gonzalez 12 kills, and Marci Logan 11 kills. Vasquez added four assists, 13 digs, and two block assists; Gonzalez added 30 assists, six digs, and four block assists; and Logan added two assists, one service ace, three digs, and three block assists.

In the women's two wins, the Lady Broncs trailed in the start of the second set, but a 7-4 run lifted them to a one point advantage. South Dakota attempted to take hold of the match, but errors gave UTPA the go-ahead and a kill by Rita Gonzalez secured the win.

In the Lady Broncs second win, UTPA trailed after leading 3-2, but a 9-2 run put the Lady Broncs up by one with blocks from Jimena Gandara and Marci Logan. A kill by Logan secured the women's second win.

South Dakota's Kristen Kritenbrink scored a match-high 26 kills along with 10 digs and one block assist.

The loss concludes the 2009 season for the Lady Broncs. UTPA concluded the season with an 8-17 mark.
