The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis program went 2-0 on the first day of the National Independent Tournament this Friday (April 17) afternoon as they defeated the Longwood Lancers (4-10) 4-0 and NJIT (11-6) 4-1 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
"In the first match we played really well. We came out strong and all the girls played really tough. It's a little tough when you know you have that much tennis ahead of you," said interim head coach Chris Gill.
UTPA handed the Lancers a 4-0 setback as the Lady Broncs took the doubles point with wins in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Stephanie Willerding and Reetta Raty defeated Zsofia Jakab and Laura Simon 9-7 while Malin Andersen and Andrea Salvetova defeated Nasim Moadab and Jackie Esguerra 8-1.
The Lady Broncs went on to notch wins in No. 3, 5 and 6 singles as Andersen won a quick 6-0, 6-4 match against Esguerra. Salvetova took another quick match from the Lancers as she defeated Ashley Melson 6-1, 6-2. Reetta Raty secured the final point for the Lady Broncs with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Moadab.
The women returned to the courts shortly after for their second match of the evening over the NJIT Lady Highlanders.
As UTPA won No. 3 doubles by default, the Lady Broncs captured the doubles point with a win in No. 2 doubles as Malin Andersen and Sarah Burton defeated Fanny Aizier and Isha Toor 8-3.
In singles play, only two matches went unfinished (No. 4 and 5) as the Lady Broncs earned victories in No. 2 and 3 singles and won No. 6 singles by default.
In No. 2 singles, Luisa Cantu went on to defeat Ana Lidon 7-6, 6-1 and Andersen handed Aizier a 6-1, 6-1 setback.
The victories improve the Lady Broncs to 4-13 for the season.
"We came out a bit sluggish in the second match, which is expected when you have to turn and play another match in 30 minutes. But we were able to battle through it and it's exciting going into tomorrow's matches 2-0 and having a chance to win this," said Gill.
The Lady Broncs will compete in the second and fourth matches scheduled on day two of the National Independent Tournament.
