LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis program wrapped up competition at the Southland Conference (SLC) Fall Championships Friday at Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
 
In doubles, the No. 7-seeded duo of freshman Mirka Delaney and senior Rhea Makesar pushed the No. 2-seeded duo, Ana Hollweg and Elena Morales from McNeese, the distance in the quarterfinals.
 
Hollweg and Morales jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set, as the Vaqueros struggled to find their footing. However, Delaney and Makesar responded with three straight games to make it 4-3. The teams traded games from there with McNeese taking the first set, 6-4.
 
The McNeese duo jumped out to another early lead in the second, taking a 3-1 advantage. The Vaqueros knotted the set at 3-3 before trading games to set up the second set tiebreaker.
 
For the first time all match, it was the Vaqueros who jumped out to an advantage, winning five of the first seven points. Leading 5-2, the McNeese duo narrowed the gap to 5-3 before Delaney and Makesar rattled off back-to-back points to clinch the set and force the deciding super tiebreaker.
 
Hollweg and Morales took control of the deciding super tiebreak, winning the first six points before switching sides. Delaney and Makesar battled back, outscoring McNeese 5-4 over the remaining points, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome as Hollweg and Morales secured the victory, 10-5.
 
The match was the longest on the women's side of the bracket today, lasting two hours and 10 minutes.
 
In singles, junior Luna Buijtenhuijs showed plenty of fight but couldn't fend off a fiery comeback from Stephen F. Austin's Ana Paula Chavez.
 
Buijtenhuijs took an early 2-0 lead before Paula Chavez knotted the set at 2-2. Then, Buijtenhuijs rattled off three straight games to take a 5-2 lead. However, Chavez responded by winning the final 11 games to secure the 7-5, 6-0 victory.
 
UTRGV has one more tournament scheduled for the fall as it travels to San Marcos, Texas for the States Up Slam, hosted by Texas State, from Nov. 7-8.
