Final Stats
For the second time this season, the Lady Broncs (1-7) faced Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette (4-5), this time at the McNeese State Invitational in Lake Charles, LA where they dropped a 3-1 decision this Friday (Sept. 11) afternoon at Memorial Gym.
The Lady Broncs struggled in the first two sets as the Ragin' Cajuns defeated the Lady Broncs 25-12 and 25-19.
UTPA returned for the third set with a little more confidence where they were able to defeat Louisiana-Lafayette 25-16.
Louisiana-Lafayette began with the upper hand as they held their final lead on a kill by Ariel Krolikowski. The Lady Broncs took the final lead of the set on a service ace by Ariana Bermea.
With the Lady Broncs defeating Louisiana-Lafayette in the third set, the Lady Broncs decided to keep the momentum going. After an early lead change, the Lady Broncs were able to tie the score at six on a block by Meghan Fichtel, who finished the match with six kills and two blocks.
The Lady Broncs then went on a 14-2 run to take a 17-8 lead over the Cajuns. UTPA slowed down their game and allowed Louisiana-Lafayette to tie the score at 20 on a kill by Bethany Fogler.
Both clubs kept a close score in the final minutes of play with five ties before Louisiana-Lafayette took the final lead and defeated the Lady Broncs 27-25.
Marci Logan, Kaitlin Vasquez (career-high) and Jimena Gandara all collected a game-high seven kills. Logan added one dig and four blocks, Vasquez nine digs and Gandara two blocks. Ariana Bermea added 11 assists for the Lady Broncs and Rebecca Toddy added another 16 digs.
The Cajuns Amie Goodwin collected 17 kills for ULL along with five digs and one block, while most of the 54 total team kills were accredited to Kendra Hall with 43 assists.
The Lady Broncs wrap up the McNeese State Invitational tomorrow (Sept. 12) afternoon with a 1:00 match versus McNeese State and a 3:30 match against Prairie View A&M.
