The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program suffered an 84-82 loss in overtime to the Houston Baptist Huskies this Wednesday (Feb. 10) afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
With the Huskies starting off ahead, it took the Broncs two ties to take hold of a solid lead during the first frame. Ben Smith drained a three-point shot to start off the Broncs with a two-point advantage.
The Huskies were able to tie the score at 27 with 5:23 on the clock, but a pair of free throws by Luis Valera kept the Broncs on track and put the Broncs up by seven at the half. The Broncs bench performed exceptionally well with the bench contributing 24 points of the Broncs 38.
The Broncs held onto their lead to start off the second half, until the 13:23 mark when the Huskies tied the score at 49 on an 8-2 run. A layup by Wendell Preadom gave way to the Huskies lead.
With 6:05 left in regulation, the Broncs came within one of the Huskies and took a lead after Aaron Urbanus drained a three to make the score 63-61.
The Huskies missed a shot on the next possession and the Broncs managed to score again on a layup by Jared Maree to put the Broncs up by four. It didn't take long for the Huskies to rally from behind as HBU took the final lead of the second half with 2:15 on the clock.
Houston Baptist managed to lead by as much as four in the final minutes of play, but remained scoreless as the Broncs scored two with 1:08 on the clock and tied the score at 69 with 43 seconds left on the clock to take the contest into overtime.
In overtime play, the Broncs were able to hold a lead on three occasions, but a three-point bucket by Nick Weiermiller would be the last lead the Broncs would see. UTPA was able to come within one after Weiermiller was fouled on the shot and sank his free throw with three seconds on the clock.
UTPA concluded the contest with four Broncs in double-figures with Luis Valera and Matt Mierzycki each scoring 17 points and Nick Weiermiller and Ben Smith adding 12 points apiece.
Andrew Gonzalez led the Huskies with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting and 6-of-11 shooting from the line, to go along with nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
The loss drops the Broncs to 3-23 for the season and 2-5 in Great West Conference play, and improves the Huskies to 6-17 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The Broncs next host Utah Valley in their final home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 13 with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m. Saturday's contest will also serve as Senior Night.
