Baseball Sweeps Al Ogletree Classic, Defeat Scorpions 13-9 in Final Game

Final Stats

A six-run eighth inning lifted the UTPA Broncs to a 13-9 victory over the UT-Brownsville Scorpions this Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Broncs scored four runs in the first three frames, a lone run in the fifth, and eight runs between the seventh and eighth innings to lift the Broncs to a 4-0 mark to begin the season.

Vincent Mejia and Bryant Elliot scored the Broncs two runs in the first inning on a single to left by Garrett Bivone.

UTPA's next two runs came in the second and third innings as Elliot crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to center by Alex Carnall. Garrett Bivone then scored the Broncs next run on a single to center by catcher Mike McCarthy.

The Scorpions turned up the heat as they scored eight runs in back-to-back innings with two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth. The eight runs put the Scorpions up 9-5 in the top of the fifth.

Centerfielder Stuart MacInnes scored the Broncs lone run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo shot to left center.

Both clubs remained scoreless in the sixth with the Scorpions never scoring again throughout the contest.

With three innings still remaining, the Broncs built up momentum as they quickly went three-up, three-down in the top of the seventh to put them back in scoring position.

Bivone then singled to right center, driving in a single run by Vincent Mejia, while catcher Mike McCarthy drove in the Broncs second run of the seventh on a ground out to second scoring second baseman Angel Ibanez.

Trailing by three runs, the Broncs had a coming out eighth inning with six runs on three hits. The Broncs six runs were scored by Adrian De la Rosa on a ground out to first by Carnall; Jon Coyne on a sac fly to right by Ibanez; Mejia on a single to right by MacInnes; MacInnes and Bivone on a double to left center by McCarthy; and McCarthy on a single to left by Jose Mendoza.

Junior Doug Roth was the pitcher of record as he pitched in the eighth inning with no hits or runs, while striking out two. UT-Brownsville's Daniel Garcia was awarded the loss after pitching one inning and giving up four runs on three hits and walking two.

Garrett Bivone concluded the evening 3-for-4, scoring two runs, while driving in three. Mike McCarthy finished 2-for-5 with four RBI and a run.

After taking a sweep at the Al Ogletree Classic, the Broncs hit the road as they face the Texas Longhorns on Tuesday, Mar. 2 in Austin, TX at the UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
