A late rally in the final innings of play lifted the Broncs to a 9-7 victory over Notre Dame this Tuesday (Mar. 9) afternoon at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
"Every time you win, against anybody, is a confidence booster. We are going to take it one game at a time. A big reason for today's win was Troy Green. He did what we needed him to do and he achieved it," said head baseball coach Manny Mantrana.
"We executed well today with a lot of contribution from the guys."
The heat was on in front of a crowd of 1,383 fans at Edinburg Baseball Stadium after the Broncs came back in the sixth to even the score at six runs apiece.
Relief pitcher Troy Green was able to keep the Irish scoreless in the top of the sixth as the Broncs drove in a lone run in the bottom of the inning to tie the ball game at six.
Catcher Alex San Juan led off and reached on a throwing error by Notre Dame's Greg Sherry as he threw the ball over the first baseman's head and into the stands. San Juan was then able to advance to third on a fly out by Ryan Vest. San Juan then scored on a fielder's choice.
The Broncs had an opportunity to take a lead after San Juan scored with runners on the corners. Bryant Elliott singled down the middle and moved Jose Mendoza to third. With Alex Carnall at the plate, Mendoza was caught stealing at the plate after Notre Dame attempted to run down Elliott.
Green remained fierce on the mound and kept the Fighting Irish scoreless in yet another inning in the top of the seventh. With Angel Ibanez on first and Vincent Mejia on third, Alex San Juan singled down the right field line and advanced to second on a fielding error by RF Brayden Ashdown driving in both Ibanez and Mejia for an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh.
The left-handed pitcher threw another flawless inning in the eighth as he faced three batters and retired the side as he threw out Ryan Connelly at first after reaching for the comebacker.
In four and two-thirds innings of work, Green was awarded the win and is now 1-0 for the season, while David Mills picked up the loss for Notre Dame and is now 1-1 for the season. Green struck out three and walked one, while giving up one run on two hits.
Bryant Elliott finished 3-for-3 and three runs, while Abraham Garcia went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and a double.
The Broncs wrap-up the two game series with Notre Dame tomorr`ow (Mar. 10) afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
