Final Stats
An opening three by Maria Ben Erlingsdottir was the only lead the Lady Broncs (12-16, 7-4) held as the North Dakota Fighting Sioux (16-13, 11-1) defeated UTPA 101-61 this Saturday (Mar. 6) afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, ND.
Bianca Torre was the Lady Broncs top scorer with 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field, including 3-of-12 from the field, and 3-of-4 from the line, to go along with a pair of rebounds and steals.
Senior Aleeya Grigsby recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds (3-off., 10-def.) along with one steal.
Rose Esther Jean contributed eight points and eight rebounds along with collecting two assists, a block and a steal. Jean is now six blocks away from tying the program's all-time blocks record of 133.
UTPA shot 37 percent from the field in the first half as compared to UND's 41 percent. The costing factor in the Lady Broncs trailing 49-31 in the first was the 17 points the Fighting Sioux scored off of Pan American's 13 turnovers.
The Lady Broncs were unable to keep up with the Sioux's pace as UTPA was outscored 52-30 in the second half. As a team, UTPA shot 37 percent from the field, 21 percent from the behind the arc, and 64 percent from the line.
North Dakota, who earned a bye at the Great West Conference Championships, shot 48 percent from the field, 56 percent from behind the arc, and 76 percent from the line.
UND finished with all five starters in double-figures. Mallory Youngblut scored a game-high 27 points, Jossy Bergan 20, Kayla Bagaason 19, Whitney Ledger 17, and Alys Seay 10 points. Ledger was the only Sioux to post a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Broncs earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament bracket, while North Dakota earned a bye. UTPA will face the No. 7 seed on Thursday, Mar. 11 at 5:00 p.m. MT in the second contest of the day.
