SAN MARCOS, TX-- The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program defeated St. Louis University, 4-3, in a rain delay that forced the match to be moved to the John Newcombe's Tennis Academy in San Marcos, this Sunday (March 7). The match was originally set to take place at the St. Mary's Tennis Center in San Antonio, Texas.
As was the case in the match with St. Mary's University the previous day, the Broncs earned the doubles point after the brothers Bernstein and the duo of Aswin Vijayaragavan and Nirvick Mohinta quickly dispatched their opponents, 8-3 and 8-1 respectively. Marcus Dornauf and Andrew Irving's matched went unfinished once the doubles point was clinched. When the point was claimed, Dornauf and Irving were leading 7-5.
After earning the doubles point, the Broncs were up 1-0 as they headed into singles competition. James McArthur defeated Vijayaragavan at line one singles, 6-1, 6-4, to even the score at one all. Dornauf defeated Chris Erickson at line four, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. At line three, Jake Hendrie defeated Beau Bernstein 6-4, 6-2 but Brett Bernstein defeated Ken Nordheim at line two, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
At line six, P.J. Hendrie defeated Mohinta 6-1, 6-3 to even the score at three all. The match would come down to line five, as Irving would take on Bryan Beasley. Irving dropped the first set 6-7(4), won the next set 7-5 and the quickly took the final set, 6-2 to earn the point and seal the victory for the Broncs.
"We played some outstanding tennis today, at every position in singles and doubles. I knew we were going to be in for a battle when we made the decision to play indoors," said head coach Chris Taylor. "They've played their entire schedule up until this weekend indoors, and it was definitely their comfort zone. We had them scouted the previous day when they played NMSU outdoors, but this was an entirely different team, but despite being at a disadvantage, our boys fought through it," added Taylor
The match was played indoors at the John Newcombe's Tennis Academy which was a neutral site, but in all actuality, it was not since the Hendrie brothers grew up there and their Dad has been a coach there since the mid 90's.
"Kiwi played an extremely tough match at number five. With the way he's been playing recently and given the hostile environment, I can definitely say he was the man we wanted to clinch the match in that situation. He did an outstanding job and maintaining his composure throughout the match. Beyond hitting a great ball today, I think it was Kiwi's ability to manage the huge momentum swings throughout the match that really brought home the win"
