Strong pitching and timely hitting kept the Broncs intact as Texas-Pan American rallied from behind to defeat the NYIT Bears 6-4 in extra innings this Wednesday (May 26) night on Day 1 of the 2010 Great West Conference Baseball Championships at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
"The team came out and played hard with a lot of enthusiasm and intensity. We have not had a big hit consistently throughout the year and today when we needed it, we had two key hits," said head coach Manny Mantrana.
"The guys put the ball in play and put us right where we needed to be today to give us that tie and the final lead at the very end. I am very proud of the way they played."
Texas-Pan American trailed the Bears by one run for four frames until Broncs starting pitcher Scott Wingo gave up two runs in the seventh to give NYIT a 4-2 advantage. Upon receiving the no decision in 6 2/3 innings, the RHP fanned 11 which tied his career-high.
In what was thought to be their final inning of play, the Broncs faced one out and runners on second and third in the top of the ninth. With Billy Donaho at the plate, he singled up the middle to drive in Stuart MacInnes. Iradier Hernandez scored on the same play, but on a throwing error by NYIT's shortstop to tie the ballgame at four runs apiece.
Donaho's RBI single was the centerfielders only hit of the game as he finished 1-for-5 with an RBI.
Doug Roth, who replaced Wingo on the bump after giving up the two runs in the sixth, managed to hold off the Bears batters and was tagged with the win (2-2) in 2 1/3 innings of work. Roth struck out two of 10 batters faced. The southpaw managed to close out the ninth quickly as the LHP saw four batters.
Heading into extra innings, the Broncs took a lead in the 10th as Alex Carnall and Stuart MacInnes scored UTPA's final two runs, on a Ryan Vest single, after advancing to third and second respectively on a failed pick-off attempt by NYIT's Mike Roth.
The Broncs brought in closer Guadalupe Barrera in the bottom 10th where the freshman right-handed pitcher earned his sixth save of the season in one inning pitched.
Offensively for the Broncs, Vincent Mejia finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored, and a home run, which put the Broncs up 1-0 in the first frame. Garrett Bivone added a 3-for-5 effort at the plate
Texas-Pan American continues with competition tomorrow night (May 27) as the Broncs face Northern Colorado at 7:30 p.m. on Day 2 of the 2010 Great West Conference Baseball Championships.
