NEWARK, N.J. - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs volleyball team swept the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20) Thursday, Sept. 23 at the Fleisher Center in Newark, N.J.
The Broncs (4-12, 1-1 GWC) took control of the match immediately in game one with 4 straight kills. NJIT's (2-10, 1-2 GWC) Katie Bartlett put the Highlanders on the board with their first point 4-1, but a kill from Ijanae Holman helped UTPA continue with momentum and remain on top. The Highlanders came within two points 16-14, but Sarah Davis responded and the Broncs continued on a 5-0 run to bring their lead to 21-14. A Highlander error and kills from Jimena Gandara, Marci Logan and a service ace from Rita Gonzalez secured game one for the Broncs 25-16.
The Highlanders came back fighting in game two, notching the first point of the set, but Logan responded and sent the UTPA on a 5-0 run to take the 5-1 lead. Following three Bronc errors and a bad set, NJIT tied the score 5-5. Holman notched a kill to put the Broncs ahead 6-5. The Highlanders refused to back down and regained the lead 9-8. Both teams traded the lead several times before Holman tallied another kill to put UTPA up 16-15. NJIT fought back, but a service ace from Sarah Davis clinched game two 25-20.
Once again, in game three, the Highlanders took the lead following two service aces and a kill from Janet Snell. UTPA notched its first point on a Highlander service error, but NJIT continued to move ahead holding on to the lead. Gonzalez and Logan posted kills to help the Broncs come back and got within one point of the NJIT 12-11. A string of Highlander errors and a kill from Davis helped the Broncs steal the lead on a 5-0 run 20-15. NJIT tried to come back but could not overcome errors. UTPA clinched the match point 25-20.
Logan led the Broncs posting a double-double 12 kills, 12 digs. Holman followed with 10 kills and both Gonzalez and Vasquez posted 15 digs.
The Broncs will close this Great West Conference road trip with a stop at Chicago State Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. (CT).
