ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs volleyball
team concluded the UT-Arlington Mavericks Classic with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) loss to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR) Trojans Saturday, Sept. 4.
The Broncs started the first game leading the Trojans following UALR errors and a pair of kills from Jimena Gandara. UTPA held its largest lead of 4 points 9-5. The Trojans fought their way back tying the set five times before stealing the lead 20-19. Another kill by Gandara and a point from Kaitlin Vasquez were not enough to move the Broncs ahead of the Trojans. UALR won game one 25-21.
UALR notched the first point of the second set, but senior Marci Logan responded with a kill. The two teams remained close throughout much of the set, tying the game several times all the way up to 20-20, but a Trojan ace gave UALR the 21-20 advantage. Ijanae Holman added another point for UTPA, however 4 kills by the Trojans' Eva Xie secured the UALR 25-21 win.
Vasquez got the third game off to a good start for the Broncs with the first point of the set, but 3 kills by UALR's Paige Gantar gave the Trojans a 3-2 advantage. Senior Rita Gonzalez responded with a kill to tie 3-3. Gantar came back with another kill to secure the 4-3 lead and the Trojans remained in control throughout the rest of the game. The Broncs fought back and closed the deficit to two points 22-20, but three straight kills by Gantar won the game 25-20.
Logan led the Broncs this evening with 13 kills and 12 digs, closely followed by Vasquez with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Next up for the Broncs is Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. at the UTPA Wellness and Recreation Complex.
