Torre Scores Season-High 14 Points in Loss

EDINBURG, Texas – Harlingen-native Bianca Torre scored a season-high 14 points for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team in a 69-58 loss to the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
Torre hit 4-of-6 shots, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc to go with three free throws. She also had four assists and one steal. LaQuita Garner led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc.
 
Down 33-12 after the first 15 minutes of play, the Broncs (3-8) came roaring back. Adanna Opara used a second effort on a missed basket by Torre to start an 18-2 run over a span of less than four minutes. Torre followed that with a pair of three-pointer and Franchesca Simon banked a shot in before hitting a pair of free throws as the Broncs scored 12-straight points. Tammara Marion hit a pair of free throws to get the Ladyjacks (8-1) back on the board, but Erin Lewis hit a pair of free throws and a lay-up and Keandra Goodson made a lay-up to cap the run as the Broncs climbed within 35-31.
 
The Broncs were within 51-45 with 11:54 remaining after a Donna Jackson jumper, but the Ladyjacks scored the next nine points to pull away.
 
The Ladyjacks were led by Marion's 19 points while Ashley Bettis and Annette Davis each scored 11.
 
The Broncs return to action for the third of three-straight home games on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Huston-Tillotson University at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
