STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Harlingen-native and junior guard
Bianca Torre scored a season-high 20 points as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the Oklahoma State University Cowgirls 74-35 on Sunday at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Torre hit a season-high 6-of-10 shots from behind the arc. The six makes also ties her career-high. Overall, Torre hit a season-high seven field goals to take over sixth place on the program's all-time field goals made list with 332, breaking a tie with
Aleeya Grigsby (2006-10).
The Cowgirls (6-0) scored the first nine points of the game, but Torre hit a jumper to get the Broncs (4-9) on the board at the 15:08 mark. After
Toni Young made a free throw, Torre hit a three-pointer to bring the Broncs with 10-5.
The Cowgirls went on a 19-6 run to take a 29-11 lead on a three-pointer by
Kendra Suttles with 6:40 remaining, but the Broncs used a jumper by
Ashley Watson and a three-pointer by Torre to get back within 13. The Cowgirls scored the final nine points of the half to take a 38-16 lead.
Torre hit a pair of three-pointers early in the second half to keep the Broncs within 39-19 and 41-22, but the Cowgirls used an 20-3 run to pull away mid-way through the half.
The Cowgirls had four players in double-figures scoring, led by Young who scored 17 points with five rebounds.
Vicky McIntyre scored 13 points with nine rebounds and four blocks.
Lindsey Keller scored 13 points with 10 rebounds and
Liz Donohoe scored 12 points with 10 rebounds.
The Broncs continue this three-game road trip on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. when they face the University of Colorado in game one of the UTSA Holliday Classic.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
