Provost's Big Game Not Enough for Broncs

EDINBURG, Texas – Junior guard Brandon Provost scored a season-high tying 20 points as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks 83-56 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
Provost hit a career-high 10 free throws on a career-high trying 10 attempts. He also hit 4-of-7 shots from the field, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc.
 
The Mavericks (7-5) scored the first eight points of the game over the span of just under two minutes. Ruben Cabrera and Provost hit free throws to get the Broncs (4-11) on the board and make it 8-4.
 
Cabrera finished with 12 points to go with six rebounds while Aaron Urbanus scored 11 points and hit three three-pointers.
 
A Provost three-pointer with 12 minutes remaining made it 15-13 and Cabrera hit a three moments later that brought the Broncs within 17-16 at the 10:35 mark.
 
The Mavericks responded with a 13-2 run to pull ahead 30-18 with 5:24 remaining.
 
Provost hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to power a 7-0 run as the Broncs pulled within 40-31, but LaMarcus Reed hit a lay-up at the buzzer to put the Mavericks up by 11.
 
The Mavericks outscored the Broncs 19-6 over the first seven minutes of the second half to go up 61-37 and put the game out of reach.
 
The Mavericks were led in scoring by Bradley Gay, who finished with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Bo Ingram scored 12 points while Jorge Redmon and Reed chipped in with 11 points each.
 
The Broncs return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host Tulane at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
