UVU SWEEPS SEASON SERIES FROM BRONCS 64-42

OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team finished their 2010-11 road schedule with a 64-42 defeat at the hands of Utah Valley University Saturday night at the UVU Activity Center. Utah Valley with the victory stayed alone atop the Great West Conference standings.

The Broncs (4-22, 1-8 GWC) were held without a point for the first 5:25 of the first half. Brandon Provost hit a three to stop the drought as the Broncs trailed 5-3. Utah Valley (15-10, 7-1 GWC) responded by scoring the next nine points and led 14-3 after Isiah Williams lay-up at the 11:52 mark in the first half. Utah valley took a 31-21 lead into the locker room at half time.

UTPA made six of 21 shots in the first half, with five of those makes being three-point hoops. The Broncs made five of their 10 first half three-point attempts.

Ben Aird scored the first bucket of the second half for UVU giving the Wolverines a 12-point lead. The Broncs began to chip away as they scored the next seven points. Matt Mierzycki's lay-up with 17:54 remaining pulled the Broncs within five at 33-28.

Utah Valley responded with a 7-0 run of their own and led 40-28 with 15:32 to play. The Broncs pulled back within nine at the 10:20 mark on another Mierzycki lay-in, making the score 47-38. Utah Valley began to pull away as they responded with a 14-1 run, which included a pair of Jordan Swarbrick three-pointers. The Wolverines led 61-39, a 22-point advantage, their largest of the game, with 4:28 to play in the game. UTPA shot 35% and made two of six three-point attempts in the second period. The Wolverines outscored the Broncs 33-21 in the second frame en-route to the 22 point victory.

Provost was the lone double-figure scorer for UTPA, putting home 15 points to lead the Broncs. Urbanus, who was held scoreless in the first half scored six in the second half. Mierzycki scored eight with three boards. Enique Mason tallied a team-high seven boards for UTPA.

Swarbrick led the Wolverines with 16 points, while also adding six rebounds. Aird chipped in with 14, while Isiah Williams helped with13. Geddes Robinson, led all rebounders with nine for Utah Valley. The Wolverines shot 42% from the field for the game.

The Broncs wrap up their 2010-11 schedule with a four game home stand. The Broncs kick off their season ending run of games next Saturday as they face the Highlanders of the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a 7:30 PM tip-off. The match-up versus NJIT will be the back-end of a Homecoming Night doubleheader. The UTPA women's team will face NJIT at 5:30 PM.
