WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS IN GWC SEMIFINALS TO UND

CHICAGO, Illinois- The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team's hopes for a second straight Great West Conference title ended on Saturday as they fell in the semifinals of the 2011 Great West Conference Championships to the North Dakota Fighting Sioux 4-0. It was the Broncs first match of the tournament after receiving an opening round bye.

The Broncs won the first flight in the doubles competition as Malin Andersen and Reeta Raty knocked off Erin Kappers and Callie Ronkowski 8-4. The Broncs would lose the next two doubles-flights as Wanda Beguelin and Dana Nazarova lost to Stephanie Petsis and Stephanie Biehn 8-6. Meanwhile Blanca Garcia and Suncica Strkic fell to Megan Sween and Hallie Welk 8-4.

It was a clean sweep for UND in singles competition. Petsis defeated Beguelin 6-4, 6-1. Ronkowski earned a 6-1,6-3 win over Nazarova and Biehn beat Strkic 6-0,6-1. The match ended once UND earned the required four points for victory.

Andersen won her first set 6-3 over Kappers but her flight went unfinished once the match ended.

The Broncs will compete in the third-place match on Sunday morning as they face Seattle University at 8 AM. North Dakota will face NJIT for the GWC title.
