Nick Weiermiller played 25 minutes to move into third place on the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team's all-time career minutes played list during an 88-58 loss to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs on Wednesday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
Weiermiller passed
Brian Merriweather (2,950, 1998-2001) by upping his career total to 2,971 minutes. Weiermiller needs to play 216 more minutes to catch
Jesus Guerra (3,187, 1972-76) for second place.
The Horned Frogs (10-5) hit eight of their first 14 shots (57.1%) while jumping out to an 18-0 lead over the first six and a half minutes of the game. Twelve of those points came off of turnovers as the Horned Frogs picked up six steals while forcing eight turnovers.
The Broncs (5-15) got on the board for the first time at the 13:16 mark when
Brandon Provost hit a three-pointer. The next time down the court,
Jesus Delgado made a lay-up as the Broncs pulled within 18-5.
Provost led the Broncs with 14 points and five rebounds while hitting 4-of-9 shots from behind the arc.
Aaron Urbanus joined him in double-figures with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go with four assists.
The Broncs played the Horned Frogs tough over the final 13:16 of the first half, hitting 11-of-15 shots (73.3%) while getting outscored 29-28 to trail 47-28.
The Broncs were within 57-35 on a Provost three-pointer with 14:41 left in the game, but the Horned Frogs scored the next 11 points to put the game out of reach.
The Horned Frogs had four players reach double-figures, led by
Hank Thorns and
Craig Williams who scored 16 points each.
Garlon Green and
Amric Fields both finished with 14 points.
The Broncs return to action on Thursday, January 19 when they open Great West Conference play at 7:05 p.m. when they visit Chicago State University.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
