BAKERSFIELD, California – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team hit 10 of their 21 attempts from behind the arc in a 72-57 loss to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners on Saturday at the Icardo Center.
The 10 made three-pointers ties the Broncs' (5-13) second-highest output of the season and their .476 shooting percentage from behind the arc is their second highest of the season.
Brandon Provost led the Broncs by hitting 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc while scoring a game-high 17 points.
Nick Weiermiller hit 3-of-5 shots from long distance while scoring nine points.
Aaron Urbanus was 2-for-6 from behind the arc for six points while
Ruben Cabrera hit his lone attempt while scoring five points.
Jared Maree was second on the team in scoring with 12 points.
Maree hit the Broncs' first two baskets and the game was tied in the opening minutes, but
Stephon Carter hit back-to-back buckets as the Roadrunners (8-9) used a 6-0 run to go up 10-4.
Earl Jefferson made a lay-up and Provost nailed a three-pointer to bring the Broncs within one, and after Carter made a free throw, the Broncs took their first lead of the game on a Provost three-pointer that made it 12-11 with 12:21 remaining in the first half.
That was Jefferson's only basket of the game, but he dished out a career-high and team-high five assists to go with a team-high seven rebounds.
With the game tied and under six minutes left in the first half, the Roadrunners went on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the half at 23-16. Weiermiller and Cabrera responded with a pair of three-pointers and Provost hit a fast break lay-up as the Broncs used an 8-0 run take a 24-23 lead with 1:06 to go.
The Broncs opened the second half on a 7-2 run, thanks in-part to a pair of baskets by
Enique Mason, to take a 33-30 lead.
The game was tied mid-way through the second half, but
Isaiah Grayson hit a jumper,
Zach Lamb and Grayson hit consecutive three-pointers, Carter hit a free throw and
Mo Hughley hit a lay-up as the Roadrunners used an 11-0 run to go up 57-46 with 7:27 remaining.
Grayson led the Roadrunners with 15 points and seven assists. Hughley scored a career-high 14 points and Carter finished with 13.
Donald Johnson scored nine points with 13 rebounds.
The Broncs return to action on Monday at 8:00 p.m. when they visit Air Force.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
