Weiermiller Passes Stoll on Assists List in Loss

USAF ACADEMY, Colorado – Red-shirt senior guard Nick Weiermiller dished out a game-high six assists to pass former-teammate Paul Stoll (2006-08) for sixth place in career-assists in University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball history during a 67-50 loss to the Air Force Academy Falcons on Monday at Clune Arena.
 
Weiermiller, the starting point guard, now has 376 career assists. Stoll, who was the senior starting point guard when Weiermiller was a freshman, finished with 373 assists.
 
Junior guard Brandon Provost, who played his freshman season for the Falcons (10-4), hit three consecutive three-pointers as the Broncs (5-14) jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the opening six minutes.
 
Provost finished with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-6 from long distance.
 
The Broncs hit five of their first six shots from behind the arc overall and had nine assists on 10 baskets while maintaining a lead throughout most of the half. The Broncs led 2-0 on an Enique Mason jumper on the opening possession, and then after Todd Fletcher hit a three-pointer to give the Falcons the lead, Earl Jefferson hit two free throws with 17:51 remaining to give the Broncs the lead for the rest of the half.
 
The Broncs twice lead by seven during the half, including at 23-16 on a Josh Cleveland jumper with 7:10 to go.
 
The Falcons took the lead back at the start of the second half on a three-pointer by Fletcher that made it 28-27.
 
Provost hit a three-pointer to pull the Broncs within 46-42 with 11:16 left in the game, but the Falcons went on a 19-2 run to take their largest lead at 65-44 on a free throw by Max Yon eight minutes later.
 
The Falcons were led in scoring by Fletcher, who scored 15 points while hitting three three-pointers. Cameron Williams recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds (seven offensive) while Mike Fitzgerald also scored 11 points. Taylor Broekhuis was the fourth Falcon in double-figures with 10 points.
 
The Broncs return to action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they visit TCU.

UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
