STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the defending WNIT Champion and No. 21 Oklahoma State University Cowgirls 96-42 on Tuesday at Iba-Gallagher Arena.
LaQuita Garner went 3-for-6 from behind the arc to lead the Broncs (2-3) with a season-high nine points.
Jasmine Thompson and
Joyea Marshall were next with seven points each. Harlingen-native
Bianca Torre added six points.
Torre also dished out two assists to tie the program record for assists with 328, originally set by
Alexis Williams (1997-01).
Seven Cowgirls (4-0) reached double-figures in scoring, led by
Liz Donohoe, who scored 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc, to go with a game-high nine rebounds.
Tiffany Bias scored 15 points with a game-high eight assists.
Toni Young scored 13 points,
Brittney Martin and
LaShawn Jones scored 12 points each,
Lindsey Keller scored 11 points, and
Kendra Shuttles scored 10 points. The Cowgirls shot 59.4 percent from the floor (39-for-64).
The Broncs won the opening tip and had an immediate lead as Marshall hit a jumper to make it 2-0. The Broncs pushed their lead to 4-0 on a
Johnondra Patterson layup. The Cowgirls got on the board for the first time after 1:54 on a layup by Young, and then took the lead the next time down the court on a three-pointer by Keller. The Broncs took the lead back at 6-5 on a
Cassandra Moody jumper, but the Cowgirls outscored the Broncs 44-10 over the final 17:04 of the half to pull away.
The Broncs continue this six-game road trip on Friday at 3:00 p.m. against Northwestern State University in the first round of the David Jones Classic, hosted by the University of Houston.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
