EDINBURG – Senior guard
Aaron Urbanus became the 22
nd player in University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program history to reach the 1,000 points plateau while leading the Broncs past the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars 77-66 on Saturday in the home opener at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Urbanus broke the record with his first basket, a three-pointer that made it 22-10 Broncs (2-5) with 10:19 remaining in the first half. Urbanus led the Broncs with 15 points, giving him 1,012 for his career. Next up on the UTPA all-time scoring list is
Steve Heard (1957-61), who ranks 21
st with 1,019 points.
Ruben Cabrera scored a season-high 13 points while
DeMarko Nash scored a career-high 10 points and dished out a career-high three assists.
Kris Davis led the Cougars (1-3) and all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
Mark Yelovich scored 11 points with eight rebounds.
Cabrera scored the Broncs first six points and
Brandon Provost added a three as the Broncs jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The Cougars got back to within 12-7 on a
Michael Messer jumper at the 13:21 mark, but the Broncs responded with a 7-0 run to push their lead to 12.
The Broncs took their largest lead of the half at 34-16 on a three by Nash with 4:13 remaining.
The Cougars started off the second half with a free throw by Messer and a jumper by
Derian Shaffer, but a layup by Cabrera sparked a 10-0 run that saw the Broncs go up 47-29 on an Urbanus three-pointer with 14:30 to go.
The Broncs took their largest lead of the game at the 9:00 mark on a
Jamal Dantzler jumper that made it 61-40.
The Broncs are back in action on Monday, December 3 when they host UT Arlington at 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6:00.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
