RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Building off the best combined basketball seasons in school history, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has set a program record surpassing 700 basketball season tickets sold for the 2026-27 seasons.

UTRGV Vaqueros basketball tips off the new season with a doubleheader Nov. 2 at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The women's team will host Arlington Baptist at 5 p.m. and the men's team will play Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7:30 p.m.

The previous record for basketball season tickets was 557 set in 2024-25. UTRGV Athletics has been intentional in its goal to grow Vaqueros basketball ahead of the new seasons and had tremendous success with the Helmets to Hoops promotion.

Head coaches Brandon Chambers and Lane Lord had their respective men's and women's teams engage with the community at the first two home football games, passing out schedule cards and interacting with fans in the corporate tailgate zone. Between sales at the two home football games and when the Helmets to Hoops promotion ran from Aug. 10-21, UTRGV Athletics sold 162 basketball season tickets – a department record for new season ticket sales in a season.

Being a season ticket holder includes perks such as one free popcorn at every home basketball game, access to exclusive season ticket holder events such as open practices, and priority access to postseason events.

The 2026-27 basketball season will bring exciting contests to the UTRGV Fieldhouse with three postseason teams visiting the Valley during the non-conference slate, including Prairie View A&M's men's team which won a First Four game in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, and a pair of women's teams in North Dakota State and Abilene Christian, which were ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25 throughout the 2025-26 season. UTRGV's men's team will play its first three games at home. There will be six Saturdays that offer fans doubleheader action with the women's and men's teams playing back-to-back at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

The 2025-26 basketball season saw UTRGV women's basketball return to the postseason for the first time since 2019 and earn the program's first postseason road win. The women reached the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament after winning 21 games and 16 Southland Conference games – both program records. The men's team won a program-best 14 conference games and recorded back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1988-90.
