Career Nights by Marshall and Thompson Propel Broncs Past Mavericks

ARLINGTON – Freshman forward Joyea Marshall and sophomore guard Jasmine Thompson broke or tied their career-highs in scoring to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team past the UT Arlington Mavericks 59-57 on Tuesday at College Park Center.
 
Marshall led the Broncs (4-6) with a career-high 17 points on a career-best 8-of-16 shooting with eight rebounds. Thompson tied her career-high with 13 points to go with a career-high seven rebounds and a career-high tying three assists.
 
Senior guard and Harlingen-native Bianca Torre hit two field goals to increase her career total to 410, passing Dawn Beachler (409, 1992-94) for third place in program history. She also grabbed a season-high and game-high five steals to increase her career total to 202, just 11 shy of breaking Cheveron Terry's (1997-2001) program record of 212.
 
Senior guard Ce'Monay Newell also had a strong game, hitting three of four shots from behind the arc for nine points.
 
Kiara Parker led the Mavericks (1-7) with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and four steals. Rosalyn Thorpe scored 10 points with six rebounds and three blocks. Aron Garcia scored seven points with a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
The Mavericks hit four of their first six field goals to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Marshall put the Broncs on the board for the first time with a jumper at the 16:12 mark, but after the Broncs got back to within four twice, the Mavericks ran their lead to 10 on five different occasions in the first half, the last of which was on a Parker layup with 5:22 remaining.
 
Marshall hit the last basket of the first half and the Broncs scored the first five points of the second half to pull within 29-27. Thope and Malaika Green hit jumpers to push the Mavericks' lead to 33-27, and a Thorpe jumper just over one minute later made it 35-29. The Broncs responded with an 8-0 run, with a Thompson layup tying the game and a Thompson jumper giving the Broncs their first lead at 37-35 with 13:24 to go.
 
The game stayed within one possession for the next 9:50, when Thompson hit a jumper to make it 55-51.
 
The Mavericks took the lead back on a Parker layup with 1:28 remaining, but a Torre three-pointer 17 seconds later gave the Broncs the lead for good.
 
The Broncs return home to face Texas Southern on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
