EDINBURG, Texas – Playing in front of a packed house of 1,784 fans on senior day, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team won their final home game of the season, 74-70 over the Chicago State University Cougars, on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (11-17, 5-2 Great West Conference) are now winners of four in a row for the first time since February 9 through 28, 2008. The Broncs are also winners of six of their last eight games. The 11 wins are the most since the 2007-08 season, when the Broncs won 18 games. The five Great West Conference wins are the most the Broncs have ever had in a season, with the previous high being four in 2009-10 season. The Broncs finish the season with a 10-5 record at home this season, their most home wins since the 2006-07 season, when they went 12-2.
Seniors
Kieondre Arkwright and
Nick Weiermiller hit three-pointers in the opening minutes as the Broncs jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Fellow senior
Jared Maree got in the action a few minutes later, connecting from downtown to make it 11-6.
The Cougars (4-23, 2-7 GWC) took their first lead at 19-18 on a
Jeremy Robinson jumper mid-way through the first half, but Arkwright responded with another three-pointer to put the Broncs back on top.
Arkwright finished with six points and one steal. Maree scored nine points with six rebounds, four assists and one steal. Weiermiller scored seven points with one block and one steal. Weiermiller scored his final two points on free throws with 4.3 seconds left to put the game on ice.
The Broncs led 49-48 on a lay-up by
Aaron Urbanus early in the second half, but
Aradrius Simmons bookended a 10-0 run with baskets to give the Cougars a 58-49 lead with 12:44 left. The Broncs responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 59-58 lead on a three-pointer by
Brandon Provost three minutes later.
The game stayed within two points until Weiermiller hit his free throws in the final seconds.
The Broncs were led in scoring by Provost, who scored 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting with six assists.
Josh Cleveland scored 11 points and
Earl Jefferson scored 10 points.
The Cougars were led by Simmons, who scored 30 points on 12-of-21 shooting, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Robinson scored 18 points with seven rebounds while
Matt Samuels scored 14 points.
The Broncs return to action on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. when they visit Utah Valley University.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
