SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell in their Southland Conference opener, 7-0, to the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Broncs (3-2, 0-1 Southland Conference) played very competitive matches in doubles. The #1 team of
Beau Bernstein and
Chetan Panditi forced a tiebreaker against
Yannick Junger and
Pedro Zanotelli before falling 8-7 (7-4). In the #3 doubles match,
Rolf Niederstrasser and
Victor Alves were edged by
Joel Rubio and
Kolby Kilgo 8-5.
The Roadrunners (4-6, 1-1 SLC) took four of the six singles matches in straight sets. Bernstein came closest to earning a point in the #1 spot, falling 7-5, 6-3 to Junger. The Broncs also came close in the #6 position, but Neiderstrasser fell to
Daniel Moser 7-5, 6-0.
The Broncs remain at the UTSA Tennis Center to take on #45 University of Portland on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
