EDINBURG, Texas –
Roger Bernal went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the Texas A&M-University Corpus Christi Islanders 11-9 in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
It is the seventh time the Broncs (11-1) have scored 10 or more runs in a game this season. The Broncs are averaging 8.33 runs per game.
Including game one, Bernal went 6-for-9 with two doubles, one triple, six RBI and four runs scored to raise his average to .500. Northern Colorado's
Adrian Schnek, who started the day hitting a nation-best .511, went 0-for-4 against Nebraska to watch his average drop to .469. Schnek's teammate
Adam Hilker, who entered the day hitting .500, went 0-3 to watch his average drop to .472.
This is the second time in program history that the Broncs have gotten off to an 11-1 start. It was previously done in 1979, when the Broncs opened the season a program record 20-1.
The Islanders (10-12) scored on Palmview-native
Guadalupe Barrera's first two pitches as
Jeramie Marek tripled and
Drew Vest hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The Broncs responded immediately against
Jake Dziubczynski (0-3) by loading the bases with nobody out to set-up a two-run double by
Vincent Mejia. One out later,
Mike McCarthy hit an RBI-groundout to make it 3-1.
The Islanders loaded the bases in the top of the third with nobody out to knock out Barrera.
Zach Zouzalik (3-1) came in out of the bullpen to induce a double play on which a run scored.
Omar Garcia followed with an RBI-single to tie the game at 3-3.
The Broncs plated four unearned runs in the fourth. With one on and two outs,
Jason Webb hit a grounder back to the mound, but the throw to first pulled
Brad Porras off the bag. The Broncs took advantage as
Derek Hagy hit an RBI-single, Bernal hit an RBI-double and Mission-native
Angel Ibanez hit an RBI-single to make it 7-3.
The Islanders scored three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one, but an RBI-groundout by Bernal in the sixth gave the Broncs some breathing room.
The Broncs put two on with two out in the seventh to set-up a two-run triple by
Riley Goulding that gave the Broncs a 10-6 lead.
The Islanders pushed across a run in the eighth and then loaded the bases with two outs.
Jonathan Sa came in with a 2-0 count on Garcia and allowed an two-run single before recording the final four outs for his second save.
Mejia hit an RBI-single in the eighth to give the Broncs an insurance run.
The Broncs kick-off a six-game road trip with the first of four at New Mexico State University on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
