EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners scored once in the eighth and four times in the ninth to comes from behind to beat the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team 7-3 on Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The loss snaps the Broncs' (16-7) 13-game home winning streak.
Trailing 3-2 after seven, the Roadrunners (14-19) got a leadoff double by
Matthew James and an RBI-single by
Ryan Dalton to tie the game.
With one out in the ninth,
Colby Braddock singled on the ninth pitch of his at-bat and
Casey Selsor hit an RBI-triple. After falling behind
Justin Anderson 3-0,
Guadalupe Barrera (0-1) intentionally walked Anderson, and then on the seventh pitch of an at-bat against James, allowed a three-run home run.
That made a winner of
Clint Sharp (2-5), who allowed a run on a
Vincent Mejia sacrifice fly in the fifth, but retired the final 10 batters he faced while striking out three in four innings.
The Roadrunners (13-19) took advantage of early errors by the Broncs. Selsor led off the game with an infield-single against
Michael Zouzalik, moved to second on an error, stole third and scored on a single by Dalton.
The Broncs took the lead in the bottom of the second.
Jordan Pacheco walked
Will Klausing and
Mike McCarthy to set-up RBI-singles by
Adrian de la Rosa and
Riley Goulding to make it 2-1.
In the top of the third, James reached on an error, moved to second on an error and later scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2.
That was it against Zouzalik, who struck out three in five innings and did not allow a hit over his final 4.2 innings, retiring the final seven batters he faced.
Roger Bernal went 2-for-5. His batting average, an NCAA-leading .468 entering the game, now stands at .465 (46-for-99).
The Broncs resume Great West Conference play when they welcome the University of North Dakota to Edinburg Baseball Stadium for game one of a four-game series on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
