Knight Goes the Distance as Broncs Drop Game One of Doubleheader

OREM, UtahDusten Knight pitched his team-leading third complete game of the season, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 7-0 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
 
The Wolverines (24-11, 10-0 GWC) jumped on Knight (3-2) right away. Jake Rickenbach and Sean Moysh opened the game with singles and Billy Burgess hit an RBI-double. Austin Heaps followed with a sacrifice fly and Goose Kallunki hit an RBI-single. Two batters later, the Wolverines had the bases loaded and Willie Pratt was hit by a pitch to force in a run, making it 4-0.
 
Kallunki added an RBI-double in the second and Burgess hit a two-run home run in the sixth to complete the scoring.
 
Knight struck out four in six innings of work.
 
Adam Gunn (6-3) pitched 6.1 innings of shutout baseball for the win, scattering six hits and three walks while striking out five.
 
Two of those hits came from Broncs (21-9, 8-2 GWC) first baseman Roger Bernal, who went a team-best 2-for-3.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
