HARLINGEN, Texas – The third-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team fell to the second-seeded Seattle University Redhawks 4-0 on Saturday at the HEB Tennis Center.
The Broncs (3-13) will face fifth-seeded Chicago State (6-17) in the third-place match on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
The Redhawks (13-13) started doubles with an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 position. In a tightly contested match at No. 1,
Malin Andersen and
Suncica Strkic defeated
Katrina Schwab and
Corinne Wurden 8-5. The No. 2 match was close, but
Gabriella Weissmann and
Sarah Lucas won three-straight games to close out an 8-4 victory over
Wanda Beguelin and
Dana Nazarova, making it 1-0 Redhawks.
In singles, Andersen, Beguelin and Strkic jumped out to early leads by winning their first sets. However,
Lindsey Newman defeated Nazarova 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, Weissmann bested
Cindy Sands 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Lucas beat
Blanca Garcia Izaguirre 6-2, 6-1 to end the match.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
