Women's Tennis Opens Road Trip with Loss

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team opened up a three-match road swing with a 4-3 loss at Prairie View A&M on Friday at the Prairie View Tennis Courts.
 
The Broncs (2-10) came close to taking the doubles point, winning on court one with the team of Malin Andersen and Suncica Strkic 9-8 after taking the tiebreaker 2-0, but they fell 9-7 with the team of Wanda Beguelin and Dana Nazarova in the No. 2 spot and 8-2 with the team of Cindy Sands and Blanca Garcia Izaguirre 8-2 in the No. 3 spot.
 
The Broncs got their points in singles on court one, where Andersen defeated Brittany Harrell 1-6, 6-0, 7-6 (9), court three, where Beguelin beat Lerato Ndlovu 6-1, 6-2, and court five, where Strkic beat Jade Daniels 6-1, 6-1.
 
At the No. 2 position, after dropping the first set to 6-1, Nazarova came close against Raven Lewis, before falling 7-5 in the second set.
 
The Panthers (6-10) took the other two singles matches in straight sets.
 
The Broncs visit No. 36 Rice University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
