Sa Dominant as Broncs Beat Houston Baptist

EDINBURG, Texas – Senior Jonathan Sa pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the Houston Baptist University Huskies 4-0 on Thursday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
 
Sa (4-2) retired the first 13 batters he faced on five strikeouts, three groundouts, four pop-outs and one fly-out. Curtis Jones walked with one out in the fifth to become the first Huskies (22-30, 13-12 GWC) base runner. The Huskies didn't get their first hit until the sixth, a leadoff single by Garrett Tully.
 
Sa recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in a career-high nine innings of work. It was his fourth-straight complete game in conference play and second shutout in three starts.
 
The Broncs (28-18, 15-10 GWC) got on the board right away against Dalton Schafer (4-8). With two outs in the first, Chris Torres reached on a two-base error and scored on an RBI-double by Vincent Mejia.
 
In the second, the Broncs loaded the bases with one out. Mission-native Angel Ibanez hit a sacrifice fly and Roger Bernal hit an RBI-single to make it 3-0.
 
That was it until the seventh, when Ibanez launched his second home run of the season over the right field wall.
 
The Broncs and Huskies play a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Game one is scheduled to last seven innings while game two is slated to go the full nine. Gates open at 12:00.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
