EDINBURG, Texas – In a game that was scoreless after 10 innings, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Houston Baptist University Huskies 4-2 in 12 innings in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Broncs (28-19, 15-11 GWC) starter
Dusten Knight and Huskies (23-30, 14-12 GWC) starter
Ryan Lower kept both offenses silent for the first nine innings. Knight struck out six while allowing six hits and one walk. Lower scattered four hits and one walk while striking out four.
Zach Zouzalik (7-3) and
Michael Schulle kept the game scoreless in the 10
th, but in the 11
th, the Huskies scored twice against Zouzalik.
With runners at first and second and two outs,
Josh Foust hit an RBI-single. After an error extended the inning and loaded the bases,
Bradley Brown walked to force-in a run and make it 2-0 Huskies.
In the bottom of the inning, the Broncs put runners at second and third with one out. After Schulle struck out
Lee Rios,
Jake Gonzalez (2-1) came in from center field to pitch and allowed a game-tying single to
Vincent Mejia on a 1-2 pitch.
After Zouzalik got the first two outs of the top of the 12
th,
Kolby Arnst doubled, Gonzalez hit an RBI-triple and
Curtis Jones hit an RBI-single to make it 4-2.
The Broncs and Huskies play game two of this doubleheader at approximately 4:45 p.m. It is scheduled to last seven innings.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
