NEWARK, New Jersey – Palmview-native
Guadalupe Barrera allowed just one run in 10.2 innings of relief, but it came in the bottom of the 18
th as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 4-3 in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
This was the Broncs' (25-15, 12-7 GWC) second longest game in program history. The longest game came near the end of the 1990 season, when they beat Stephen F. Austin 4-3 in 19 innings.
Barrera (0-2) pitched racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts while scattering five hits and two walks. It is believed to be the longest relief outing in program history. The last time a Broncs pitcher went more than nine innings was on April 29, 2006, when
Dane Mason pitched 10 innings as a starter at Coastal Carolina, a game the Broncs won 2-1 in 11 innings.
Barrera started off the 18
th inning by striking out
Jeff Pizzi.
Mike Rampone followed by reaching on an infield-single. After
Matt Weckerle flied out, Rampone stolen second, setting up a walk-off double by
Ed Charlton.
That made a winner of
Joe Fasano (2-1), who pitched 5.2 innings of hitless relief, striking out four while walking two.
The Highlanders (19-21, 10-9 GWC) got on the board in the second against
Dusten Knight on an RBI-single by
Bryan Bleakley that made it 1-0.
The Broncs loaded the bases with nobody out in the third against
Tripp Davis.
Riley Goulding grounded into a double play to score
Vincent Mejia and move
Angel Ibanez to third.
Adrian de la Rosa followed with an RBI-single, and after a
Shanke Klemcke single,
Derek Hagy hit an RBI-single to make it 3-1.
That was it against Davis, who allowed 11 hits and two walks while striking out four in nine innings.
The Highlanders got a run back in the sixth on an RBI-ground out by
Anthony Caiola, and then tied the game in the seventh on a home run by Rampone.
That was it against Knight, who struck out eight in seven innings of work.
The Broncs and Highlanders complete this four-game series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
