LUBBOCK – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team opened the dual season with a 1-6 loss to the No. 29 Texas Tech University Red Raiders on Wednesday at McLeod Tennis Center.

The Broncs (0-1) picked up their lone point at No. 1 singles when freshman Thomas-Orestis Panoulas defeated Red Raiders (1-0) senior Vitor Manzini 4-6, 6-4, 10-2. This was a long awaited match, as Panoulas and Manzini were supposed to faceoff on October 21 in the 2RC Round of 32 at the ITA Regionals, but Manzini withdrew while Panoulas advanced to the quarterfinals.

The Broncs played close sets at several other positions, with freshman Alejandro Sanoja forcing a second set tiebreaker before falling to Francisco Zambon 0-6, 6-7 (5). Junior Chetan Panditi and freshman Joseph Bishop played tight second sets at the No. 3 and No. 6 spots respectively, but both lost 1-6, 5-7 to their opponents, Gabriel Wanderley and Raphael Pfister.

The Raiders took the other two singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles, the No. 3 team of Panoulas and junior Victor Alves played Wanderley and Zambon to a 6-6 tie in an unfinished match as the Broncs dropped their matches in the top two positions.

This Broncs are back in action on Sunday, January 27 when they visit No. 55 Rice at 3:00 p.m.
