EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team drew 1,018 fans for Broncs Against Breast Cancer night, benefiting the Renaissance Cancer Foundation, to bring the Broncs' season total to a program record 5,337 fans during a 3-1 loss to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Monday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Broncs are averaging a program record 762 fans in seven matches with four home matches remaining. Last season, the Broncs drew a then-program record 5,109 fans, an average of 639 fans in eight matches.

The Antelopes (8-11, 2-5 WAC) won the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-17. The Broncs (11-14, 1-8 WAC) took the third set 25-15, but the 'Lopes won the fourth set 25-18.

Junior Krysta Freitas led the Broncs with 12 kills and 11 digs while sophomore Haley Durham had 11 kills. Senior Nycole Masaki recorded a match-high 35 assists while Shanice Faison led three Broncs in double-figures digging with 14. Redshirt junior Maria Kliefoth had a match-high three blocks.

Megan Davis led the Antelopes with 11 kills and 13 digs, making her one of three 'Lopes with a double-double, joining Jessica Posse, who had a team-high 24 assists and 11 digs, and Marilyn Agae, who had 14 assists and 14 digs. Mackenzie Phelps recorded a match-high 18 digs.

The 'Lopes jumped out to big leads in each of the first two sets, going up 11-3 in the first and 11-6 while leading almost wire-to-wire and taking a 2-0 match lead.

The 'Lopes scored the first point of the third set as well, but the Broncs responded with a 7-2 run to take a four-point lead on an ace by freshman Alisha Watson. The 'Lopes responded with a 5-2 run to pull within 9-8 on a Lanie Muys kill, but a Freitas kill was the first of three-straight points as the Broncs as they rebuilt their four-point lead. The Broncs extended their lead to seven for the first time at 19-12 on Watson's third ace of the set en route to taking the set and pulling within 2-1.

The Broncs and 'Lopes were close early in the fourth set, as the Broncs led 7-6 on a kill by Watson, but the 'Lopes scored the next five points as part of an 11-3 run to go up 17-10. A Freitas kill brought the Broncs back within six, but that's as close as they got.

The Broncs kick-off a three-match road trip on Saturday at 4 p.m. at New Mexico State.
