Box Score

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 72-61 on Sunday in the final game of the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Islanders Basketball Tournament at the American Bank Center.

Graduate student Javorn Farrell led the Broncs (2-4) in scoring for the fifth-straight game with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Sophomore Shaquille Hines scored a career-high 13 points.

Hameed Ali led four Islanders (3-2) in double-figures scoring with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Zane Knowles scored 13 points with a game-high 12 rebounds. Jeff Beverly had 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Coles Martinez finished with 11 points.

Junior Shaquille Boga opened the game with a three-pointer, but Knowles and Beverly scored six points each to help the Islanders go on a 15-2 run to go up 15-5 in the opening eight minutes.

The Islanders went up by as many as 15 in the first half at 28-13 on a Knowles layup with 6:39 remaining in the first half, marking what was then the Broncs' largest deficit of the season.

Farrell scored a game-high 13 points in the first half, including a layup with 53 seconds left to bring the Broncs within seven at 32-25, but a Beverley layup to close the half and back-to-back three-pointers by Ali to open the second half gave the Islanders their 15-point lead back. A Joy Williamson free throw at the 18:21 mark made it a 16-point game for the first time and punctuated a 9-0 run.

After a Boga three brought the Broncs back within 13, Ali, who had just two points in the first half, connected on another three to push the Islanders lead to 44-28 with 16:11 remaining.

The Islanders went up by as many as 24 twice, the second time at 57-33 on an Ali jumper with 10:50 left. The Broncs responded with a 15-1 run, started by a Hines jumper and ended by a Hines three to bring the Broncs within 10 five minutes later, but that's as close as they got.

The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they visit UTSA.
