EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – In a game that saw both teams go on extended runs and lead by at least 10 points, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars 55-49 on Monday at Vadalabene Center.
The Broncs (4-6) led by as many as 10 at 15-5 with 7:54 remaining in the first half, while the Cougars (2-6) took a game-best lead of 16 at 39-23 with 13:57 to go in the second half. Despite that, the game featured seven lead changes and three ties, with five of those lead changes and one of those ties coming in the final 5:21.
The frantic finish started when junior
Shaquille Boga hit a three-pointer to cap a 19-2 run and put the Broncs up 42-41, marking their first lead since the first half.
Rozell Nunn hit a free throw to tie it and then
Kris Davis hit one to give the Cougars the lead back. Boga responded with a layup at the 3:28 mark to put the Broncs up 44-43, but
Christian Salecich hit two free throws to put the Cougars back on top. Sophomore
Shaquille Hines nailed a layup to again give the Broncs the lead at 46-45, but Nunn made a jumper and a three-pointer before Salecich came up with a dunk with 26 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Boga led the Broncs in scoring with a career-high tying 17 points and three steals. Graduate student
Javorn Farrell recorded his first-career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds (five offensive).
Salecich led the Cougars with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Nunn finished with 15 points and four rebounds.
The Broncs return home on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host UTSA at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
