EDINBURG – Sophomore
Shaquille Hines scored a career-high 27 points, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Duquesne University Dukes 88-69 on Sunday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
In the highest scoring output by an individual for the Broncs (4-10) this season, Hines hit a career-high 12 field goals in a career-high 22 attempts. He also recorded his first multi-three-pointer game, with three on a career-high six attempts. Graduate student
Javorn Farrell was close behind, scoring 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting. He hit a career-high tying three three-pointers on a career-high eight attempts. Farrell dished out a season-high tying six assists, posted a career-high three blocks and tied his career-high with four steals in a career-high 40 minutes.
Hines had 10 of his 12 first half points in the opening seven and a half minutes on two three-pointers, a layup and a jumper to keep the game close as it was tied at 15-15.
Micah Mason and
Ovie Soko combined for 15 points as the Dukes (6-5) responded with a 22-4 run take a 37-19 lead with 5:11 remaining.
The Broncs scored 10 of the next 14 points to pull within 12 on three-pointers by senior
Justin Leathers and junior
Christian Hildebrandt. The deficit stayed in the teens for most of the rest of the game, until, down 74-58 with 7:55 remaining, the Broncs went on a 7-0 run thanks to layups by Farrell and Hines and a three-pointers by Farrell to make it 74-65. The Dukes, however, outscored the Broncs 14-4 over the final five minutes to end the game.
Soko led the Dukes with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Mason scored 14 points while hitting four three-pointers.
Jeremiah Jones scored 11 points with nine rebounds.
Tra'Vaughn White finished with 10 points.
The Broncs open up their first season in the Western Athletic Conference on Thursday at 8 p.m. when they visit Grand Canyon University.
