Women's Tennis Visits Texas State Saturday

SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team (0-2) visits the Texas State University Bobcats on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs fell at No. 29 Rice 0-7 on January 20. The Broncs dropped all three doubles matches, but played one tight one. At the No. 3 position, Didi Fatchikova and Manon Lavrijssen fell to Kimberly Anicete and Stephanie Nguyen 7-8. The Owls won all six singles matches in straight sets.
 
Scouting the Bobcats
This is the Bobcats' dual season opener. They were originally scheduled to open the season last weekend against SMU, but that match was postponed.
 
During tournament play, Jessica Kahts led the way with a 10-5 singles record. She went 6-6 in doubles, but 4-1 when teaming up with Katy Collins.
 
The Series
This is the sixth meeting all-time between the Broncs and Bobcats in a series dating back to 1991. The Broncs are looking for their first win.
 
The Broncs and Bobcats last met in 2011, a 0-7 road loss for the Broncs.
 
The Broncs and Bobcats had some clashes in tournament play this season, including at the Bobcat Tennis Complex for Texas State Play Day on October 27. Results included:

Katy Collins (TXST) def. Manon Lavrijssen (UTPA) 5-7, 6-1, 10-5
Gabriela Rojas (TXST) def. Dana Nazarova (UTPA) 6-2, 2-6, 10-3

Gabriela Rojas/Jessica Kahts (TXST) def. Reegan Greenwood/Anastasia Burobina (UTPA) 8-3
 
The Broncs and Bobcats also teamed up for one doubles match, as UTPA's Julia Perez and Texas State's Frankie Bernes fell to UTSA's Kavya Menon and Lynsey Maciolek 8-9.
 
Ranked Win
The Broncs (0-1) picked up their lone win of the season thus far in doubles against No. 36 Arkansas, as the No. 2 duo of Anastasia Burobina and Wanda Beguelin defeated Flavia Araujo and Kimberly - Ann Surin 8-5.
 
When in Roma…
The Broncs have one local student-athlete in Roma-native and freshman Julia Perez. During her four years at Roma High School, Perez went 72-0 and never lost a district match. She was District 32-4A MVP, First Team All-Valley and First Team All-District in Doubles all four years. She was also the 2009 and 2011 singles district champion, as well as the 2012 doubles district champion. The Gladiators won the district title every year she was there and were ranked No. 12 in the state in 2011. Perez also led the Gladiators on a 52-match winning streak in district play.
 
In addition to her stellar tennis play, Perez was a regional qualifier in swimming all four years, led the golf team to their first ever regional tournament, led the basketball team to the 2012 playoffs, and earned honorable mention in golf in 2011 and 2012 in basketball in 2011.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries, including Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, The Netherlands, Russia and the United States.
