NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – The Northwestern State University Demons used a seven-run sixth inning to complete a 10-4 come from behind victory over the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team on Sunday at Brown-Stroud Field.
With the game tied 3-3,
Cort Brinson reached on a pinch-hit infield-single and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Nathan Lyons hit a grounder to short that should have been a fielder's choice, but an error allowed Brinson to reach third and Lyons to get to second.
Matt Farmer followed with a pinch-hit two-run double. After a
Garrett Kilgore walk,
Will Watson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. This opened up first base and led to an intentional walk of
Nick Purdy to set-up the double play.
Matt Baca hit the ball on the ground, but an error by third baseman
Alberto Morales allowed two runs to score and the runners to advance to second and third.
Edwin Gomez followed with a two-run double to knock out Broncs (2-5) reliever
Bryan Maxwell (0-1). Roma High School alum
Isaac Martinez came in and, one batter later, allowed a sacrifice fly to Brinson to cap the inning with the score 10-3.
Gomez was the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Demons (5-2) finished with eight hits, including three in the seven-run sixth, but took advantage of nine walks and two Broncs errors.
That made a winner of Demons reliever
Joe Siegfried (1-0), pitched three innings of relief, allowing onw run on two hits and one walk.
The Broncs took that lead after
Derek Hagy led off the game with a walk against Demons starter
Andrew Adams. One out later,
Alex Howe walked. The Broncs created a run by pulling off a double steal, and as the throw from Purdy sailed into the outfield, Hagy scored. One out after that,
Will Klausing singled to make it 2-0.
Shane Klemcke drew a leadoff walk in the second, and then after a wild pitch, Adams plunked
Andy Fortuna. Funk came in, and after striking out Hagy, got
Riley Goulding to hit a grounder to shortstop. The flip to second base for the out was in time, but the relay throw got away, allowing Klemcke to score to make it 3-0.
Broncs starter
Matt Daniels was in control until the fourth, when the Demons loaded the bases with nobody out on two singles and a walk. Wallace followed with a bases clearing double to tie the game.
The Broncs got their final run in the eighth when
Dillion Engelhart came up with a two-out pinch-hit single and Klemcke followed with an RBI-triple to make it 10-4.
The Broncs are back in action on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. when they visit UTSA.
