EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team (0-8) returns home for three matches in two days, part of a four-match home stand, starting Friday at 10 a.m. against the University of the Southwest Mustangs and then at 2 p.m. against the No. 48 St. Mary's Rattlers at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs men's tennis team will be in action simultaneously, also facing USW at 10 a.m., while hosting No. 48 St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
Fans will be able to spend the entire day enjoying Broncs tennis in the sun. There will be concessions, including $1 hot dogs, chilidogs, hot Cheetos with cheese, Frito pies and drinks.
There will be contests and giveaways throughout the day, including a free t-shirt for the fan(s) with the most Bronc spirit and/or best poster.
Admission is free.
The Broncs
Wanda Beguelin and
Reegan Greenwood lead the Broncs in singles. Beguelin Is 6-12, including a 2-6 dual mark, while Greenwood is 5-7, including a 2-6 dual mark.
Anastasia Burobina has the Broncs' other dual singles win, going 1-4 and 4-11 overall.
Scouting the Mustangs
The University of the Southwest is an NAIA school. They have exactly six student-athletes on their roster.
The Series
The Broncs were scheduled to play the Mustangs in their season openers in both 2008 and 2009, but the Broncs won both matches by default.
Scouting the Rattlers
The Rattlers are 3-2 entering action on Feb. 28, but have lost their last two matches, including 2-7 at Midwestern State and 1-8 at home to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Rattlers hosted Northeastern State University on Thursday.
The Rattlers are 9-6 (.600) in doubles and 20-10 (.667) in singles. Mariana Rong leads the way with a 4-0 record, all of which has come at No. 1. Felicity Delgado is 4-1, including 1-0 at No. 1 and 3-1 at No. 2. The Rattlers have winning records at every position except No. 5 (2-3).
The Series
The Broncs are 3-0 all-time against the Rattlers in a series dating back to 2002. They last met on April 16, 2011 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, a 5-2 victory for the Broncs. Two current Broncs played in that match.
Wanda Beguelin and
Dana Nazarova went 2-0 in singles and teamed up for a doubles win. Their opponents have since graduated.
Last Time Out
Roma High School alum and freshman
Julia Perez made her dual debut in a 0-7 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at home on Tuesday. Perez teamed up with Did Fatchikova for the Broncs' closest doubles match, falling 4-8 at No. 3 to Madier Martin and Mia Matuszak. Perez dropped her singles match at No. 6, 3-6, 1-6 to Leanne Mascall.
Home Sweet Home
The Broncs are 0-2 at home this season and were 1-1 at home last season, but are 24-8 (.750) over the last eight seasons.
You Can Put it on the Board
The Broncs picked up their first match points of the season at UTSA on Feb. 3, as
Wanda Beguelin defeated Alena Shichkova 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and
Anastasia Burobina (UTPA) beat Kavya Menon (UTSA) 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4.
Ranked Win
The Broncs picked up their lone win of the season thus far in doubles against No. 36 Arkansas, as the No. 2 duo of
Anastasia Burobina and
Wanda Beguelin defeated Flavia Araujo and Kimberly - Ann Surin 8-5.
When in Roma…
The Broncs have one local student-athlete in Roma-native and freshman
Julia Perez. During her four years at Roma High School, Perez went 72-0 and never lost a district match. She was District 32-4A MVP, First Team All-Valley and First Team All-District in Doubles all four years. She was also the 2009 and 2011 singles district champion, as well as the 2012 doubles district champion. The Gladiators won the district title every year she was there and were ranked No. 12 in the state in 2011. Perez also led the Gladiators on a 52-match winning streak in district play.
In addition to her stellar tennis play, Perez was a regional qualifier in swimming all four years, led the golf team to their first ever regional tournament, led the basketball team to the 2012 playoffs, and earned honorable mention in golf in 2011 and 2012 in basketball in 2011.
Globetrotters
The Broncs currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries, including Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, The Netherlands, Russia and the United States.
