EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team lost to the University of New Orleans Privateers 4-3 on Monday at the newly renovated Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs (6-12, 0-2 Southland) grabbed the early advantage as the team of
Thomas-Orestis Panoulas and
Victor Alves defeated Guillermo Aylon and David Malmgren 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles spot. The Privateers answered back as Rui Silva and Abdelrahman Zaki beat
Chetan Panditi and
Ricardo Hopker 8-6. New Orleans clinched the doubles point with a victory at No. 1 as Hossam Meligy and Ricardo Campos defeated
Alejandro Sanoja and
Sebastien Job 9-8.
In singles, the Broncs got off to a slow start as
Sebastien Job fell to Hossam Meligy 5-7, 2-6 at No. 5 but UTPA did pick up a point after
Chetan Panditi won by default.
Ricardo Hopker then defeated Rui Silva 6-3, 6-0 tying the match at two.
The Privateers (8-6, 4-0 Southland) then took the lead as Abdelrahman Zaki defeated
Alejandro Sanoja 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4.
Thomas-Orestis Panoulas then tied the match at three after defeating Ricardo Campos in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. New Orleans clinched the match after David Malmgren defeated
Victor Alves 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 at No 6.
The loss snaps the Broncs' two-match win streak.
The Broncs are back in action as they visit Texas Christian University on March 30 at 5:00 p.m.
