HOUSTON – Down to their final out, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team rallied for two runs in the ninth before, but the Houston Baptist University Huskies scored on two errors in the 10
th to win 5-4 on Friday at Husky Field.
With the Broncs (16-17, 7-2 Great West Conference) down 4-2 entering the ninth inning,
Aaron Moore led off with a single against
Jake Gonzlaez, who had come in from centerfield to try to close the game. One out later,
Riley Goulding walked, and then after a groundout put both runners in scoring position with two outs,
Shane Ammon doubled to left to tie the game.
Mathew Harrell (0-1) took over for the Broncs in the bottom of the 10
th and got
Jordan McCoy to pop-up to shortstop, but as the wind blew the ball around,
Shane Klemcke was unable to make the catch and McCoy, running the whole way, ended up at second. Gonzalez followed by trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but Harrell had trouble with the ball and threw it away, allowing McCoy to score to end the game.
That made a winner of
Kobie Hajdik (1-0), who worked in and out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the inning.
Sam Street started for the Broncs and didn't allow a hit until the fourth, when
Luke Clements led off with a single. One out later, Gonzalez walked. Clements and Gonzalez then pulled off a double steal, and as catcher
Chris Torres' throw sailed into left field, Clements scored to bring the Huskies (17-16-1, 6-3 GWC) within 2-1.
Clements was the catalyst again in the sixth, when, after leading of with a double and moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, he scored on a suicide squeeze by
Samm Wiggins to tie the game.
With two outs in the seventh,
Josh Foust reached on an infield-single and
CJ Jarvis followed with an RBI-double to give the Huskies the lead.
The Huskies added what turned out to be a crucial insurance run in the eighth on a two-out RBI-single by
Mike Chamberlain.
Street pitched nine innings for the Broncs for the fourth time this year, striking out four while allowing eight hits and three walks.
The Broncs got on the board against Huskies starter
Ryan Lower right away.
Derek Hagy led off the game with an infield-single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error to make it 1-0.
Hagy was the only Bronc with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-5.
Goulding led off the third with a single, moved to second on a ground out and to third on a passed ball before scoring on a suicide squeeze by Ammon to make it 2-0.
The Broncs and Huskies play games two and three of this four-game series as part of a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. Game one is scheduled to last seven innings while game two is slated for the full nine.
